Each August, just before Ferragosto, Urbino embraces its glorious past, transporting visitors back to the magnificent era of the Renaissance. And it is all thanks to the Festa del Duca. The entire town transports itself back to the fifteenth century, creating a whole different atmosphere. The old town teems with taverns, music, performances, entertainment, and activities for the whole family.
This year, mark your calendars for 11-14 August, as the Festa del Duca – Federicus Theatrum promises exciting events and all-new spectacles!
Musicians, acrobats, and archers will enliven the streets, squares, and alleyways. Cultural events will take place in the Ducal Palace’s majestic Cortile d’Onore, and a grand re-enactment will bring to life the victorious moments of the Battle of Cesano in 1462.
This event is deeply cherished by the locals and captivates the attention of numerous tourists, who eagerly partake in this immersive and unique experience.
The festival will feature elaborate parades, including collaborations with visiting delegations, along with authentic re-enactments that faithfully recreate events from Duke Federico’s era.
On the final evening of the Festa del Duca, be prepared for the ancient Giuoco dell’Aita, a game of skill and strength traditionally played during periods of peace that saw the local people and the court compete against each other; both as a physical exercise and as potential revenge against the nobles. It is a truly incredible mix of dodgeball and capture the flag!
The Renaissance symbolises rebirth, resplendence, and the rekindling of artistic beauty. Urbino stands as a perfect embodiment of this era.
Entrance to the Festa del Duca – Federicus Theatrum 2023 is free.
